SILVER LAKE REGIONAL HIGH
SCHOOL

Every yearbook at Sil-
ver Lake has had a
theme which truly de-
scribes each class. This
year the yearbook staff
had a hard time deciding
how to describe the class
of 1983 because our class
does not fit a general
classification. Each
member of the class is
very different from all
the others. It was sug-
gested that we set our
theme on the uniqueness
of the individuals in our
class with the theme
Piece by Piece. We see
the class of 1983 as a
large puzzle in which
each person is one piece.
Each piece of the puzzle
is different but when put
together they will form a
picture of uniqueness
that is different from any
other class in the history
of Silver Lake Regional
High School.

We've Only Just Begun
We've only just begun to live,
White lace and promises
A kiss for luck and we're on our way.
Before the rising sun we fly,
So many roads to choose
We start out walking and learn to run.
And when the evening comes we smile,
So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to
grow,
And yes, We've Just Begun.
Sharing horizons that are new to us,
Watching the signs along the way,
Talking it over just the two of us,
Working together day to day, together.
Paul Williams
DEDICATION
By tradition, every yearbook is dedicated to
an outstanding individual that the senior class
feels especially close to. This year, the 1983
Torch editors felt very strongly about two such
outstanding individuals. Mr. Rock; for his many
years of devotion and dedication to the Silver
Lake students. Mr. Rock, "We will miss you
upon your retirement." Mr. Aherne, for his
support and attention to Silver Lake students
and particularly for his interest in the Class of
1983. Mr. Aherne, "What did we do when you
weren't here?" It is therefore with great plea-
sure and admiration that we, the Class of 1983,
dedicate this yearbook to both Mr. John Rock
and Mr. John Aherne. We wish you both the
best of luck on your new beginnings.
Each year the graduating class has had as a re-
membrance of their high school years a "yearbook"
that captures briefly their involvement within the Sil-
ver Lake School community.
This recapitulation is reflective upon life in general
since many members of the class have greatly contrib-
uted to their own growth and development while
others have been less than enthusiastic about their
contributions.
Your benefit from an activity is related to the same
degree that your efforts reflect your commitment to
that activity. Thus, it is our hope that you have come
to the realization that you are the key to the improve-
ment of life. It is you who must begin to be the decision
makers of today and the leaders of tomorrow. It is you
who must be concerned about the proliferation of
nuclear arms, destruction of our ecology, and the
scarcity of our fresh water.
The greatest obstacle to growth and development,
to learning, and to improving life is the question of
self-doubt and the questioning of ones own ability. It
has been our goal at Silver Lake Regional School
District that we discipline rather than furnish the
mind, to develop logical thinking and to use its own
powers, rather than have you accumulate a store-
house of irrelevant facts. To this end, it is our hope
that we have provided to those of you who have bene-
fited from our service an opportunity that will be the
foundation for your life ahead of you.
To others who have not been as insightful, it is not
too late to pursue with vigor your interest and skills
that will enable you individually and society as a
whole to be the benefactors of your efforts.
May I extend to each member of the graduating
Class of 1983 my congratulations and best wishes.

TO THE CLASS OF 1983
Your commencement is not an end but a beginning.
You are embarking on a voyage, in that your Silver
Lake Regional High School education was but a point
of departure.
It is my hope that you continue to gain knowledge
and experience in life, and use these acquisitions for
the betterment of your community and nation.
The very best wishes to the Class of 1983.

"THE PUZZLE OF ME'
Assorted puzzles make up
ME
Just how they fit, I try to

What are these feelings
swirling around?
Why am I up and then I'm
down?
I'm happy, then sad, then
in-between.
What do all these puzzles

DEAR PAUL
Remember the carefree days
And Tonka toys
Little kid games
And silly nicknames
Walt Disney
And the boogie man
Nobody told me growing up would be so
hard
If we could only go back to yesterday.
Everything so perfect, so right.
The only hurt we had were skinned knees
Now I have to deal with life and death
Love and hate
Broken hearts
This list goes on forever
Life, however, doesn't
Yours seemed to have ended
Before it began
I try to cry k
But the tears don't come
Things happen
That I don't always understand
The end is near
The final curtain and all that
Sooner or later we'll all be with you
So don't worry
You won't be alone for eternity
I hope everyone in your new life loves you
as much as we did
I'll remember your smile
And put it in my heart
It'll be like you never died
Inside you'll live forever.

CLASS HISTORY
In 1979, with anxiety and high hopes for our four years to come, we entered Silver Lake as a class with no hope.
We'll soon show them what we've got . . . Our first step into a new beginning was headed by MoiraTeevans, our
president, Linda Rodrique our vice-president, Maryellen Lynch Homecoming Princess . . . This school is huge
. . . Those seniors are sooo big . . . Teachers hate freshman . . . Farewell Mr. Coupe . . .
As Sophomores, we lost the insecurities of Freshman year and we began to flex our muscles and our brains. We
were introduced to a rough exterior of Mr. Napoli (who put the fear of God in us all.). Once again our president
Moira Teevens . . . Super Bowl Champs . . . Prop. 2Vi ... Our first float "Sink the Sailors" . . .
Upperclassman! Our Junior year brought us more responsibility and with that, more work. We were headed by
President Moira Teevens (again) . . . PSAT'S . . . History . . . Scottish visit . . . First prom "Wild Horses" . . .
Smoking room? . . . Valley Girls "Oh My God" . . . Nice float Juniors, "Laker Machine" . . . New Student
Handbook . . . Parties?? . . . Move over Class of '82, here comes '83 and we're lookin' good.
Seniors, at last. Principal Jack Aherne will see us off as his first and favorite graduating class "Luck Guy".
President, guess who? (Moira) . . . SAT'S . . . Achievements . . . College Applications . . . Pep Rally — Senior
Spirit . . . Food Drive, Evening Magazine-Sensory Perception . . . Who painted the rock and how many times . . .
Semi-Formal . . . Parties-YES! ... DJ at the prom? . . . Mexican Exchange . . . Punk invasion . . . Our final
goodbyes . . . We left our mark and we're not as bad as they thought!! ... To complete the puzzle of our high
school years — Good Luck Class of '83, we did it our way . . . June 4, 1983.

Punk and New Wave are in,
disco is quickly going out . . .
WBCN, WCOZ and KISS 108 are in,
JB105 & FM 105 are way out . . .
Calvin Klein jeans and other designer jeans are in,
yet good old Levis will never be out . . .
The "preppy" look is supposedly in,
but some SL students will tell you it's absolutely out . . .
Stereo "boxes" and walkmen are in,
while transistor radios are out . . .
BK and Mama Mia's are in,
but unfortunately McDonalds is out . . .
Jogging is in,
but walking anywhere is out . . .
Driving around is in,
but finding something to do here is out . . .
Leathers and dungaree jackets are in,
snorkels and down jackets are out . . .
Punk hair cuts and minis are in,
while Dorothy Hamilton's and Danskins are out . . .
The 1982-83 hockey team was in,
but the basketball team was down and out . . .
Fridays are always in,

Games like Scrabble and Atari are in,
but Spin the Bottle and Monopoly are out . . .
Powder Point and beaches are in,
but the Mall is out . . .
Finally, parties will forever be in,
while SL seniors are passing out . . .
And even after graduation,
the class of '83 will always be in!

FOOTBALL
CO-CAPTAINS, Wayne Chapman, Bill Foley,
Ed Remondi, Kevin Stevens,
The Silver Lake Football team had many positive
moments even though their record was 4 wins —
6 loses. Richard Moylan rushed for more than
1,000 yards. Richard now has Silver Lake's all
time rushing record or more than 3,000 yeards.
Both John Gillen and Richard Moylan were all-
stars and John received an all-scholastic nomina-
tion also. All in all the year was great. We had a
much better team that our record indicated but
we lost our first string quarterback Kevin
Stevens and many other valuable players.

Led by coach Mrs. Majorie
Cronin. the SL girls field
hockey team with a record of
7-4-1, only Vi point away
from qualifying for the state
tournament. Lydia Berry
and Terri McMakin were the
team captains. The team's
seniors were Linda Rodri-
gue, Barbara Andrews, Don-
na Rogovich, and Adrienne
Bluhm.

The 1982 Silver Lake Golf Team compiled a
respectable 6-4 record. Silver Lake Golfers
finished third in the final O.C.L. standings.
The key performers for the team were Cap-
tain Mark Johnson, James Gauley, Keith
Gauley, Bing Murphy, Jeff Rankin. Scott
McKee, Tommy Rice and Kevin McKenna

BOYS' CROSS COUNTRY
The boys' cross country team had a good season despite several injuries. Outstanding
runners were captain Pat Lane, Pat Seltsam, Mark Kandola, Eric Ulvila, Dave
Fernades and Joe Goodwin. Pat Lane was named to the league all star team.

GIRLS' CROSS COUNTRY
This years girls' cross country
team has possibly the best team in the
history of SL cross country. Led by
captain Moira Teevens, the team
finished with only one loss. The
Teevens sisters were named to the
first team all stars. L. Christmann, A.
Pratt, C. Glass and S. Murphy were
named to the 2nd team all stars. As a
team the girls finished 2nd in the Mass.

BOYS' SOCCER
1982 Soccer team was a young team
with few seniors. Led by tri-captains
"Duck" Doherty, Keith McNamara
and Tom Supple, the team had a
strong finish with a final record of
6-9-1. "Duck" Doherty broke a
school record by scoring 16 goals dur-
ing the season. Although plagued by
injuries, the team had great spirit and

CHEERLEADERS
Always there, on the field or court,
with unfailing spirit and pride, the
Silver Lake Cheerleaders stand by
their teams through victory and de-
feat.
They endure grueling practices and
many sore throats, but the cheering
goes on and the smiles never fade.

ICE HOCKEY
The 1983 hockey team was one of the most talented squads to
come to Silver Lake. Even though the team had many downfalls,
such as the loss of home ice at Hobomock Arena and injuries, they
still proved to be a strong skating force by breaking two jinxs, one at
Randolph and the other by winning the 1st tournament game. The
team was notorious for the well known abilities of captains Kevin
Stevens, Scott McKee, Walter Pratt and John Hurley, as well as
seniors Sean Keane and Bill Foley. Much was expected of this team,
yet a lack of luck caused them to lose another OCL title and Boston
Garden appearance. They generated much pride and spirit in Silver
Lake!

GOAL!
117
The Laker Girls' Basketball Team worked very hard toward total
team improvement this season. Led by senior captain Caron
Ahearn, the Lakers relied heavily on their improved team speed
and quickness both on offense and defense.
Key players were juniors Priscilla Cubie, Susan Budak, Deidre
Kennedy and Linda Nali as well as many sophomore players.
The Lakers met the challenge of the tough Old Colony League
schedule and finished the season with a very fine 13 wins and 4
losses. The second place league finish enabled the girls to qualify
for post-season tournament play for the third time in the school's
history. The Lakers were an exciting team to follow this season.

119
Boys'
Basketball
The boys' varsity basketball team
had a tough season in the Old Col-
ony League in 1982-83. A young
team, they struggled all season but
earned valuable experience. Of the
15 players, only three were seniors.
Very competitive and exciting to
watch, the team, featuring 10
juniors, figures to be very experi-
enced and ready to play next sea-
son. With Chris Mosher, Gary
Kehoe, Jeff Ryan and Scott Plausse,
coach Dick Arieta noted that 'we'll
have a fine front court for next year.
With Tom Rice, Phil Doyle and Rob
Vickers we'll have good stability in
our backcourt as well."
Two players who switched back and
forth between the subvarsity and
varsity teams, — Keith Gauley and
Rob Costell — should also see a lot
of action next season.
"This year we had the best ability
and balance in several years. The
important part of the season was the
cohesiveness of the team. That, in
itself, will help make next year pro-
dictive." Arieta said.

than ever were: President — TerriMcMa-

retary — Wendy Singer, Treasurer —
Kelley Higgins, and Advisor — Mr. Kel-
ly. The most outstanding activity they
organized was Silver Lake's first Pep Ral-
ly in eight years! Once again the semi-
formal and bloodmobile were great suc-
cesses. Unity among campuses was a ma-
jor goal. All in all, Student Council kept
Laker spirit high.

A LEARNER
Each day I learn more
Than I teach;
I learn that half knowledge of another's life
Leads to false judgement;
I learn that there is a surprising kinship
In human nature;
I learn that it's a wise father who knows his own son;
I learn that what we expect we get;
I learn that there's more good than evil in this world;
That age is a question of spirit;
That youth is the best of life
No matter how numerous its years;
I learn how much there is to learn.
Virginia Church
The advisors of the 1983 yearbook would like to thank the editors and staff for
all their hard work. We all started this year as novices, and in the process of
learning the editors and staff have produced a yearbook of which you will be
proud. A yearbook does not just come together; it is produced by many hours of
hard, often tedious work. The class of 1983 should consider themselves lucky to
have had such dedicated editors. Without them the yearbook would not have
been published.
Thank you editors from your advisors.

HOMECOMING & PEP RALLY
ilUll
Our Homecoming had a monumental start
on November 12th when Silver Lake had
their first pep rally in years. It was very much
a pleasant surprise to see Silver Lake Pride
come alive. But it didn't stop there! The
Homecoming Dance was put on Saturday
night with Drywater & Gorilla playing up a
storm! Queen Terri and Kings Kevin &
George made an unbeatable royal court. The
next day was the Big Game with all the class
floats, and although we didn't win, the spirit
and effort shown by fans and players made it a
very special Homecoming!

sociology Fight For Hunger project. Per-
formed on December 20, the show proved to
be a lot of fun, as the students of Silver Lake
exhibited their talents. Ellen Doyle won the
award for the best act while Krank was
chosen as the best band.

this page is to show that through it all we still remain one school and one graduating

EXCHANGE
Silver Lake's exchange program
brings back many memories for
all of us. Our freshman year
brought us a taste of France
along with a few strange experi-
ences. A Scottish invasion took
place in our junior year. Two fun
filled weeks brought us bag
pipes, kilts, and a tearful good-
bye. Three memorable months of
our senior year were shared with
our Mexican friends. They
bridged the gap between our
country and theirs, and for that,
they shall remain in our hearts.
Through these experiences we
learned more than any book or
filmstrip could ever teach us. For
all the terrific memories we thank
them.

mates, teachers, principals, staff members, parents, and all
of the people that make up the halls of the school, will be long
remembered by you, as the echoes of your voices dim.
Memories that you may forget will come rushing back to
mind as you glance across the pages of your yearbook and
the photographs therein will remind you of the good times
you all shared.
In the coming years, we hope that you will call upon us to
record those moments in your life which deserve profession-
al photographic attention. As your future dreams become a
reality, think of us often ... for we record the GOOD
TIMES in your life.
Sincerely,
Loren and Barbara St. Onge

believe that free universal public education is the foundation of our democracy.
We hope that your education has given you an understanding of and a feeling for our culture —
where it came from and where it may be going.
We hope that you have developed some sensitivity for cultures different from our own.
We hope that you have mastered the skills that will make you a productive citizen and that will
enable you to think clearly about political and social issues.
We hope that you will exercise your right to become involved in the resolution of those issues.
We hope that you will not stop learning.

The Key
To
Your Future
Now that you are a high school grad, we welcome you to the real world. Just as your diploma will follow
and help you through life, so will your credit rating, once established.
Prove to us you're a 1983 high school graduate by bringing in your diploma, and we will consider your
application for a Puritan Charge Account.
Come in and ask for RICHARD FREYERMUTH, or ED MACCAFERRI, JR., and let us help make
"your key" open the doors of the future.

SILVER LAKP
Being the puzzle; there is no
escape.
Restore the upturned ruins of
the night;
They do not match by color
but by shape.
The pieces grow in number,
shrink in size.
The shadows pull us closer to
the light.
Begin the puzzle, There is no
escape.
The broken sky compels us
to awake;
The scattered shreds of
mountains dim our sight;
They do not match by color,
but by shape.
Remark the texture of the
curves and planes.
Stand back and focus
mystery's delight:
Begin the puzzle; there is no
escape.
The New Year dawns upon
the ritual:
We put the sky together,
fitted tight:
It does not match by color,
but by shape.
We feel, and test; we fail and
find. We rise.
Return the picture to
component shards:
Begin the puzzle. There is no
escape.
It does not match by color,
but by shape.
